What Is Truth (in game worldbuilding)

The question to start with: How do you present information as truthful in your world?

Okay, there’s a lot going on here, and it involves defining in order to get some specificity. The principles might be universalisable but I sure ain’t gunna pull it off here. This is primarily considering world-building for a game, and not the world-building for a conventional narrative explanation like a story or web serial or whatnot. Those are worlds where you can, amongst other things, go back in time and change the setup you have for the story you want.

And you should.

That’s what editing is.

But in the making of a world for a game, you have to make a way for people to interact with a playful space that gives them boundaries and things to interact with (that are cool and fun or ‘engaging’ if you want to be technical) and that means you need to confer the reality to these players in ways that you, the person building the world, may struggle with depicting.

The task of depicting truth is different in storytelling for a conventional narrative and for a game. Particularly, games have an interface layer that typically speaking, players have to have some reason to believe they can trust, and the job of the interface is to serve as a window between the reality of the game (ie, you are a player interacting with a playful device) and the fiction of the game (there are fuckin DRAGONS man).

See, one of the easiest ways to convey ‘true’ things to your players is to describe ideas in an entirely objective sense. This is this, this is that, and then you use objective measurements as much as you can, in the objective voice of a narrator. This is fine, this works out just okay, and I don’t want you to feel bad in any way about doing this this way, but when you present information like that, you have presented that information as reliable. That creates a sense of trust which you then can just poop down your leg when you have to explain that something you told them isn’t true.

Obviously you can be okay with this, I mean it doesn’t matter if a Metroidvania videogame has to indicate that an early message log was a lie. It needs to be done with a bit of care though because say, if a game opens by telling you that you’re using a stun gun to knock people out through the whole game, and then reveals, shock horror, that actually it’s a murder gun that has been knocking people into death with kill bullets, then the result isn’t going to be a player feeling an emotional distress at the realisation that they were doing something wrong because they trusted the wrong person, you’re going to have a player rejecting the experience, falling out of the fiction and going: this is bullshit.

I think on this because I think about how I present information from Cobrin’Seil. Cobrin’Seil is a D&D setting. It’s meant to be made for people to play in in a setting that is primarily mechanically oriented, where the world can be represented by reasonably reliably systems. Wizards in the top of the world and the bottom of the world can both cast spells that are similar and those spells may work differently under the hood, within the fiction, but are still reasonably coherently reliable things. The same is true that the followers of a death god can heal people with spells that may look entirely different to the spells of a god of the harvest but in the end, the people experiencing the outcome still wind up healed.

I think that the world of Cobrin’Seil is more interesting and more rewarding to write about if there is a strict delineation between the concrete and reliable — rules information — and the social and communicated — things people talk about in the world. That is to say, if you need to roll a few d6 or d8s for a thing, that’s rules information, segregated, and, thanks to 4th edition’s excellent trade dress (the way the books are designed to look) we have a good standardised way to express that. But if you want to know about the world, the things in the world and the way they relate to one another, then that’s where you talk to people and people have biases, and all the information presented in the world is presented as if it is being told to you by a person.

When I’m discussing the world of Cobrin’Seil, then, I know that it’s easy to state questions from a near-objective narrative position, but to deliver answers it should always have an attribution, a source. That source then gets to be someone potentially wrong, and to bring in their own biases and their own opinions.

I know that in Cobrin’Seil, I am biased towards presenting wizards who study things and write things down as a useful source of studyable information. I also know I don’t necessarily verify that information or make it widespread. Sometimes I like that because there are some things I want to be objectively true. For example: Wizards can prove that racism is based on nothing meaningfully true. On the other hand, that doesn’t mean people don’t believe in racism or engage in it, but that there is some objective authority in the universe that can say ‘look, this is a social system that sucks, and ‘detect racism’ spells won’t work.’

Otherwise, though? Things like how magic works? What gods can do? How fairies can manipulate reality? That stuff is all competing theories, maybes, possibilities, and I try to make sure it’s always at least three competing theories.

That bias remains, though, right? And it stands to reason, I, a person working in academia who is working on higher education, would likely see the advantages to and potential authority of a system like that. But that also demonstrates something of my biases towards, you know, things being written down. I could have it so that there are shamanic songs and lyrical poetry that carry important narratives of truth… except I’m not good at writing those, so I don’t.

This is what you need to be mindful of. There are ways to represent what’s ‘true’ in your worldbuilding, in the information you present to people, but you need to also be mindful of your biases. You need to maintain a sense of truth that players can engage with and you need to be mindful of where it’s okay to lie to them.

children need education AND our education system is inadequate and traumatizing. it is a system designed to marginalize and contain children, rob them of their autonomy, and create compliant workers for capitalist bosses. any benefits individual students take from being forced to interface with this incredibly abusive and traumatic system are not reflective of the *system* of education.

school does not work for a LOT of kids, and the ones it does “work” for end up woefully unprepared to contend with the rest of their lives. former “gifted” kids who learned how to utilize the system to their advantage and were rewarded based on arbitrary criterion like whiteness and perceived intelligence are constantly posting about the way being given special treatment set them up for failure.

and these are the supposed success stories!!!

my god, a prayer for the kids who are punished by the school AND their parents without recourse for bad grades!!! a prayer for the kids who have been told they’re “too stupid” for anything but prison or minimum wage. a prayer for the people who go into education to teach and have to leave, burned out beyond recognition when they realize most of the day is trying to act as warden to 30 kids at a time.

children are not getting “stupid” because of chatgpt. children are not illogical. they are responding to the misery of being asked to do a task they hate, which they are not learning from, by trying to get around that task. they are responding to the pressure of insane expectations that they be superhuman to have a shot at being full participants in society.

we have failed kids over and over. i can get into the specifics— racist school segregation, standardized testings, the war on drugs, the propaganda saturating school curriculum, the forced institutionalization of noncompliant kids, the school to prison pipeline.

fucking hell, it’s a miracle any kid learns anything at all in those places. anyway, if you’re still in school reading this: keep cheating, i love you, and you’re right. school is fucking stupid and pointless. but it does get better when you’re out. ❤️.

The workshop was hidden deep within the ruins of an old industrial district, concealed by layers of security both physical and digital. She adjusted her headset, glancing at the directions on her tablet. Each step closer to her destination felt like walking into a legend. No one met Yeosang unless they had to, and even then, the encounters were rare and shrouded in secrecy.

A rusted door came into view, flanked by flickering motion sensors. She reached for the access card she’d been given, but before she could insert it, a mechanized voice crackled through a hidden speaker.

“Step back.” The voice was calm but unyielding, as if the speaker already doubted her competence.

She sighed, holding their hands up. “I’m here for the resistance. Mission code Theta-9. You can verify it.” A pause. Then the door creaked open just enough for her to slip inside.

 The workshop was a labyrinth of technology: glowing blueprints floated mid-air, devices hummed softly on cluttered tables, and wires coiled like metal vines. The air smelled of solder and ozone.

In the center of it all stood Yeosang.

He didn’t look up immediately, his attention fixed on a holographic display filled with scrolling data. His expression was serene, almost detached, as his fingers moved through the interface like a conductor commanding an orchestra.

“You’re late,” he finally said without turning around.

She raised an eyebrow, unimpressed by the lack of acknowledgment. “Or maybe you’re just early.” She let the door shut behind her, leaning casually against a table. “You’re Yeosang, I presume?”

The faintest twitch of a smirk appeared on his lips before he turned, his gaze sharp and assessing. “And you’re the operative who’s supposed to keep the resistance from falling apart in the field. Let’s hope you live up to the hype.”

“Bold words from someone hiding in a workshop,” She shot back, though there was no malice in her tone. Her eyes wandered to a nearby table where a small device emitted a soft glow. “Is that the drone disruptor?”

Yeosang stepped forward, blocking her view. “It’s a prototype. Not a toy. You don’t touch anything unless I say so.”

She crossed her arms, smirking. “Touchy. You know, I could help. Tech isn’t exactly foreign to me.”

Yeosang narrowed his eyes. “You think you can keep up with this?” He gestured to the sea of machines and data displays around them.

“Only one way to find out,” She replied, already reaching for a diagnostic tablet on the table.

For the first time, Yeosang hesitated. Instead of brushing her off, he tilted his head, watching as she deftly navigated the device’s interface. she made a quick adjustment to the output configuration and held it up for him to see.

“Looks like your disruptor’s feedback loop is unstable. I tightened the parameters. Should work better now,” she said casually.

Yeosang stared, the faintest trace of surprise flickering in his eyes. “Not bad,” he murmured. “But let’s see if you’re as useful under pressure.”

Yeosang didn’t waste time with further pleasantries—he turned back to the holographic display, his fingers moving with precision as new schematics unfolded in midair. She watched him work for a moment, her curiosity piqued despite herself.

“You know,”cshe said, breaking the silence, “for someone who supposedly doesn’t trust anyone, you’re taking a big risk letting me in here.”

Without looking up, Yeosang replied, “Trust has nothing to do with it. I needed someone who could make the delivery without breaking it. That doesn’t mean I trust you to do more than that.”

She bristled at the slight but hid it behind a smirk. “And yet, here I am, already fixing your prototype.”

Yeosang’s hands paused over the hologram, and he glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “It wasn’t a complete fix,” he said flatly. “But it was... sufficient.”

She snorted. “Wow. High praise.”

Yeosang ignored her sarcasm and returned to his work, but she wasn’t about to let him off the hook so easily. She stepped closer, scanning the holographic schematics. The disruptor device he’d built was leagues ahead of anything she’d seen before, its complexity matched only by its elegance.

“This is brilliant,” She admitted, genuine admiration creeping into her tone. “The way you’ve routed the power flow to minimize energy loss—most engineers wouldn’t even think of that.”

Yeosang’s head tilted slightly, as if intrigued by her observation, but he still didn’t respond.

“And these dampening fields,” She continued, gesturing to a section of the blueprint. “They’re calibrated to avoid detection while still neutralizing the drones. That’s... risky. But clever.”

This time, Yeosang turned to face her fully, his expression finally betraying a hint of interest. “You know what you’re looking at,” he said, more a statement than a question.

“Enough to appreciate good work when I see it,” she replied with a shrug. “Guess you’ll just have to decide if you’re impressed or annoyed by that.”

Yeosang studied them in silence for a moment, his gaze sharp and calculating. Then, to her surprise, the corner of his mouth lifted in the faintest trace of a smile.

“I’ll let you know,” he said, his tone lighter than before.

She chuckled, leaning against the table. “You know, for someone who doesn’t like people, you’re not as insufferable as I expected.”

“And for someone who barged into my workshop, you’re less incompetent than I expected,” Yeosang shot back, his voice dry but not unkind.

Their eyes met, and for a brief moment, the tension between them shifted, replaced by a mutual spark of respect.

“So,” She said, pushing off the table, “what’s next? Do you let me help, or do I just stand here and look pretty?”

I think it’s because people have often used ‘TERFs hate men’ as a way to implicate trans women as men or argue that TERFs focus primarily on men and not trans women, so people are sort of trying not to do that, plus the fact that TERFs do the most damage towards trans women. In my opinion, I do think TERFs hate men but trans women are A. minorities and B. radical feminism often manifests by just trying to sex segregate as much as possible, so the people they don’t like way over ‘there’ are much less likely to be direct targets of vitriol and violence than the people messing up their dichotomy and trying to come over ‘here’

i agree with your basic analysis, but i stop short of the conclusion that radical feminism's targeting of trans women isn't fundamentally rooted in the way it analyzes men and manhood. many transfems are not men (some are, important to note when making broad generalizations about gender and feminism); radical feminism targeting transfems is targeting women (among tons and tons of other genders, transfem men included), however, the political ideology itself is premised on the idea that the groups it is targeting are solely made up of men, and it is positing an entire framework for how gender operates as an axis of oppression that casts these demographics as male.

like it is factually true that radical feminism's Transgender Problem flows directly from the fact that it perceives gender as the radix of oppression within a binary sex modality. it is patently garbage analysis because sex is not binary and gender is, in terms of societal forces, an abstract set of social conditions enforcing the constructed sex binary (rather than any material or ontological trait of individuals). radical feminism perceives trans women as dangerous, predatory, and a threat to cis women precisely because it perceives sex as a binary that is fundamentally immutable and unchanging. it wholly perceives anyone with an arbitrary number of primary and secondary sex characteristics as a man, on a level where "man" is a biological category that bodies themselves slot into. it's based on an understanding of patriarchy as a structure controlling the means of reproduction, and gender as solely a weapon with with which to maintain control over the means of reproduction (a lot of it is really just failed attempts at transplanting, unchanged, marxist analysis onto the concept of childbearing and its relationship to patriarchy).

i think it's important to keep your analysis grounded in this fact because, well--yes, radical feminism explicitly targets transfems and is a massive source of violence toward transfems in particular and trans people overall, but laser-focusing in on only how it interfaces with transness--particularly to the degree of arguing that it only targets trans women, and doesn't have anything in particular to say about men, because it does not categorize transfems as men within its ideology but rather as super-abusable women that are only misgendered for the purpose of manipulation and extortion--that throws out an entire section of analysis that's. genuinely important to how it affects the material world. like, radical feminism's framing of men and manhood directs a significant amount of violence toward intersex people, for example, and casting sex as an immutable binary category is the entire basis for that violence. if it didn't analyze sex as an immutable binary in which men are cast as owners of the means of reproduction by virtue of their unchanging sex characteristics, that would not have the same interaction with intersexism. you can't accurately analyze the political movement's fundamental intersexism without first understanding this.

its cool that there is real and meaningful advocacy for rights and progress in large urban centers in the US, but there really needs to be more attention on rural communities. when suburban sprawl from a highly urban locality begins to cross over municipal borders into neighboring rural localities, the newly established and more affluent commuter-communities in rural localities (which more or less exist separately from the agriculturally-established semi-urban centers that the locality was previously centered around) use their assets to shift local legislative power over to people that intentionally take municipal resources away from the existing semi-urban agricultural community centers so that they can further develop their commuter-communities into an upper middle class suburb-and-stripmall hell. this DIRECTLY leads to the establishment of an economic segregation (which oftentimes manifests as informal racial segregation) that only worsens over time. the former agricultural community centers are further stripped of resources and abandoned in favor of the newer community that is utterly uninterested in the agricultural foundation of the locality. agricultural lands are continually re-zoned to residential/business zones that cater to the newer community. the older community centers rapidly deteriorate and the people/businesses capable of leaving do so -- if the areas are deemed promising enough by corporate oligarchs, they are colonized by the storefronts of horrible mega-conglomerate businesses that only provide the lowest quality goods possible. if an area is too low-income to afford these goods, it becomes a food desert. education funding for their schools are allocated away so that the schools in more affluent areas can build new wings and replace their chalkboards and projectors with digital interfaces. and it's all because the people who CAN afford to live in big cities want huge ugly suburb houses that are far away from the urban poor people that they're horrified of.

Cybermorph ideas!

So? We got the whole reproduction ask thingy from before. Maybe, a queen can choose where the transfluid goes? Like maybe they can retain it? It's possible in snakes, why not wacky aliens.

Also, Megs just panicking in a field because EGGS is such a funny image. Imagine the second time it happens, he does feel some obligation to return to them, dragging somebot with him, trying to figure out why he wants to return this time. Only for the eggs to "latch on" to the bot. Imagine his horror. He doesn't know his own workings. To learn how eggs work would be chaos for him.

Ooooh now I've got THOUGHTS

So... this is a little difficult. We established previously that Megatron isn't able to asexually reproduce until he's much older, with an established hive. Which means, if these eggs he's just laid are going to hatch, they have to have a sire. Cybermorph queens can hold onto transfluid to fertilize eggs later, right? Hear me out, then: it's not something they do consciously. It's smthn their body just performs on it's own, and he has no control over it. Just a natural happening of the reproductive system and there's nothing he can do about it short of a sterilization surgery.

So. Megatron is operating under the assumption that these eggs are sterile. The nesting instinct made him withdraw from Kaon and he ended up slinking into a crack in the planet's surface, somewhere dark and secluded where no one would bother him. After the clutch's arrival, he assumes that they're not fertile, same as the first batch. His last time interfacing with someone was a quite awhile ago, waaay before he started to feel eggheavy. He doesn't feel any connection to them, and so just... leaves.

He returns home a few days after nesting, checking in with his parents to let them know he's back. They freaked out pretty bad when he suddenly vanished the first time, so now he makes sure to tell them he's not dead.

And this is where it gets a little wonky. He has very few cybermorph friends: they are the first generation, after all. None of them have experienced any egg cycles, and they're all operating under the false assumption that cybermorph conception is the same as cybertronians: that the fertilization happens exclusively during sex. They don't know it can happen out of order, that there can be large gaps between the actual interfacing and the fertilization of eggs.

I mentioned previously that the war eventually starts when the cybermorph population has swelled considerably, quality of life in the south plummets, and the north side of the planet clings to a strict segregation lockdown. Said lockdown was put in place almost immediately after the first gen of cybermorphs popped

The little ones that come out are half and half, obviously, but their spark is really what matters. Newborn xenomorphs are loyal only to their queen and their hive. But these newborn cybermorphs don't have either. What they do have, however, is alien blood and physical souls in their chests that are linked to their cybertronian carriers. And their carriers are alive. They're bonded to these mecha from birth, can feel their emotions and hear their thoughts, just like any other sparkling. The bonds are incredibly strong, due to utter lack of a queen to imprint on and only growing stronger when their host parents deign to raise them.

Because they possess sparks and energon and have carrier-creation bonds, they're largely judged to be cybertronian. Or at least, cybertronian enough to avoid slaughter. The Senate can't order them killed, because their emergence makes international news, and even if they are incredibly freaky looking, they still possess a soul. Killing them would be infanticide. People would riot. Begrudgingly, the Senate allows the newborns to live, but the trade off is total segregation. No warframes may leave the southern half of the planet without rigorous medical exams and quarantine procedures, and the cybermorphs grow up in designated safety zones Just In Case. The Senate is constantly monitoring them, whether they know it or not (they don't).

Now, going back to Megatron's clutch. The first eggs really are sterile. He leaves them in that little nesting spot and never goes back for them. The Senate, however, does. They send someone to retrieve the eggs for testing, also assuming them to be sterile. They're filled with the cybertronian equivalent of water, a lifeless, perfectly clean oil that has no genetic code in it. Curious.

The second batch, though... not so much. Megatron thinks they're sterile, and so do the ones watching. Another retrieval team is sent in, except this time, they get the facehugger treatment. From what I've read, being implanted with an embryo causes a bit of short-term memory loss (or at least, it did with the first victim), so when the incubators awake in the nest once more they see that the eggs are destroyed and report back to the Senate. They were too late, the eggs have already hatched.

Now, for one reason or another, the retrieval team isn't permitted to cross the border. That's either because of quarantine procedures or because they're warframes that already live there, but regardless. They're still on the southern half of the planet when the morphlings pop out of them

This time, however? These babies don't feel any connection to their host, because they already have a(n unknowing) queen. Megatron is their carrier, not their incubators. He can sense them, in his spark, as well as instinctually, and he goes off on the prowl to hunt them down. He doesn't really know what he's looking for, at first, not until he finds his first cute little sparkling

Or well. "Cute". Cute to him. If they're anything like actual xenomorph newborns they're kinda long and wiggly and wormlike, but nyeh. We can figure that out later.

Regardless. Megatron finds out the hard way that those eggs weren't sterile, and he's very confused. He knows he didn't have any intimate relations whe the eggs were forming, so what gives? And also, how the HELL is he going to manage his morphlings? What if the Senate tries to take them away? What if he can't feed them all? What if- what if-

BLACK WHITE YES NO ZERO ONE

A twitter thread from the other day, archived.

Something that's nagged at me for a REALLY long time about how cultural narratives get oversimplified, to the detriment of the best artists, came into relief for me at the weekend: the false dualities at the heart of American canonical criticism are the ghosts of segregation.

Recently on a FB group someone was asking why Latin freestyle wasn't better known. Valid question because it's one of THE keystones of the last 40 years of pop. Thinking back through reporting of the 80s it occurred: because history has been written - literally - as Black And White.

(Before this goes any further, pls note this is NOT to erase Black music or say it's all one big happy clappy melting pot, quite the opposite really)

When I was about 12 and first really into pop - so mid 80s - I got given a fat Rolling Stone tome that presented itself as a definitive history. It presented the birth of rock'n'roll as the Big Bang, the source of everything thereafter: and, crucially, it painted this origin point as what happened when black met white, specifically a fusion of R&B and country.

Very strong implication (possibly made explicit, I can't remember, but I feel like it was) was that this was "African rhythm plus European melody and harmony".

Fine, I was 12, I had no reason to doubt this, I was finding stuff out, great. As I learned more, for years I never came across much to make me question the Creation Myth or its assumptions; it was written into everything.

It was only YEARS later that I read a brilliant book about the Brill Building generation of songwriters, and understood the complexity of the rock'n'roll era and the birth of pop, soul etc. In particular: huge swathes of the songs were written by Jewish kids obsessed with Latin mambo.

(Side note - given that Spanish music contains huge amounts of Arabic influence, it's fun to whimsically think of this interface as a moment of Middle Eastern reunification)

Again, this is not to say that the African, Celtic, Anglo influences previously cited weren't real, even dominant, but suddenly the picture - and all the histories of migration, exile, colonialism, slavery etc -burst open, became three dimensional, came to life.

Around this time I also discovered Paul Gilroy and ideas about the Black Atlantic, i.e. that diaspora was multiple and complex with criss-crossing influences of its own. Realising that ofc "Latin" music included all sorts of African historical influence ("cumbia", or "cumbees", was noted as an African style in the 17th century!) made me realise that history was interwoven all the way down.

Since, it's nagged at me that American culture so often gets presented as Black Music / White Music as monolithic things - until recently, Latin was a category Somewhere Over There (even with its own separate Grammys) - but didn't really think about the root of that assumption.

But then yesterday, responding to that freestyle question, the term "Black And White" leapt out: having that binary opposition written into mainstream as the source of EVERYTHING in popular music is an expression of segregation mentality. The same mentality that kept radio, recording industry, etc so split apart in the US.

Yet as jazz and country hit 100 years old, and we look again at the history of THEIR genesis, they were each, as Beyoncé lately reminded us, SUCH a tangle - even in Jim Crow time, music WAS a place for information exchange that couldn't happen elsewhere.

AGAIN: this is not to say there's no such thing as Black Music in the USA, obviously there is. But as we start talking about decolonising history, reasserting things like the roots of house and disco etc, it's worth being vigilant for false binaries as a vehicle for stereotyping and oversimplification of multiplicities of history and identity.

(Another side note: it made me realise why I hate poptimism vs authentocrats etc, because that is just the FALSEST of false binaries)
